55 Music Studio: XIAO Bing Chih

Xiao Bing Chih

Xiao Bing Chih

Pop Singer-songwriter

Legend says that the pioneer of medicine, Shennong, after having tasted over a hundred different kinds of herbs, was able to prescribe the right medicine to people and cure all their ailments. With this in mind, Xiao Bing Chih named his newly established recording studio Shennong. He says, “I have a tattoo that says, Feel the pain. Heal the pain. I’ve experienced much pain in the past, but now I am able to use music to heal not only myself, but also others that have experienced the same pain.”

Perhaps growing pains, the bittersweetness of love, and life’s ups and downs that we only understand in hindsight are all things that transcend cultures and borders. Through music, 55 Music Studio invites the audience into musical artists’ lives and experiences, piercing through the lyrics to the stories they have to tell, finding the truth hidden within the melodies. After six years, pop singer Xiao Bing Chih returns to TAIWANfest. This year, he will share with us his journey of loss and recovery of the last few years, as well as news of his upcoming album, a social commentary on today’s society with an experimentally darker tone, to be released next year.

Just as he hopes his fans will continue to learn as they grow, we see Xiao Bing Chih grow as his creations shift from conversations with himself and interpersonal relationships to reflections of the society we live in. With his music, he leads his fans in a journey of self-growth, learning to take responsibility for themselves as well as learning how to care for the community we share. From mere mortals, we have learned to heal ourselves and become strong enough to release our inner madman, to light each other up and keep shining.

About The Artist

Xiao Bing Chih made his first debut as a vocalist for the band Magic Power in 2009. Acting as a vocalist for the band, most of the songs were written by him. In the past, Bing Chih usually wore sunglasses for his public appearances. He may seem a bit cool and uncaring, however, the songs he writes always transmits endless power and warmth to the audience’s heart.

His first two hits “I Still Love You” and “Who Am I” aim to encourage people to be fearless of social stereotypes, judgements and binds, advocating one to find and connect with yourself, and to have the courage to stay true to yourself. Due to this healing characteristic in his songs,  he has gained immense popularity among teenagers.

Bing Chih is good at creating music with the piano. He has written songs for many famous singers. He describes writing songs as a life salvation journey. Through the power of music, he’s able to freely express the multiple facets of “love” in different versions of life. Only through creating music can he finally find a way to release and express his emotions. In 2018, he released his first solo album Mortal. This album focuses on encouraging people to observe, listen, and fully embrace their feelings, even during their darkest moments in life. This year in 2021, Bing Chih is working on his second album. This one will be more focused on exploring and expressing one’s different modes of one’s self. Through this album, he also hopes that his audience can see his growth and transformation from the mortal who debuted to the person he is now.
